It appears that Basant yet again is attracting a huge interest among Lahoris and Pakistanis. It is still not clear whether the government will allow it or now. However, people want to celebrate it – on February 28. Let’s hope that the avid fans of kite-flying and those who want to celebrate the spring weather are not disappointed.

well so nice of you, well i dont think that govt will lift the ban as its hardly few days left and lahori’s wont celebrate basant as i have seen last year too, it was celebrated in all cities of pakistan but not in lahore, even this year i am coming for basant, m leaving for lahore tomorrow from uae, but i am still confused what lahori’s will do as its sure that govt will not give permission or the stupid kite flying association will trick people like last time by just extending the date and making everyone fool, basant should be this weekend and come one lahori’s if i can come from abbroad every year for basant, what has happened to u all? lets show unity and celebrate basant this year please

basant have become a political issue this year rather than anything else, goveronor wants to celebrate, so CM will never allow basant. So dont be hopeful in this regard afterall our all politicians are selfish and eggoist, so if you want to celebrate than we all have to celebrate on our own this weekend.

Three killed celebrating Basant in Punjab LAHORE: Three people lost their lives and scores others were injured while celebrating Basant festival in various cities of Punjab on Friday.
Five seriously injured were admitted to a local hospital.
According to details, three men were killed in separate incidents of falling off roofs and firing in Sargodha, Shorkot and Kamonki.
Basant was celebrated in different parts of Punjab including Shaikhupura, Kasoor, Sahiwal and Okara in spite of the ban.
Firing amid Basant celebration in Kamonki killed a teenaged girl while two young men died after falling off a roof in Sargodha and Shorkot.
Similarly, more than 40 people were injured while flying kites or running after them in Kasoor, 5 of them injured critically were shifted to the General Hospital Lahore.

Basant celebrations likely after change of govt: KFA

LAHORE: There are bright chances of celebrating Basant and preparations for the festival have commenced with the change in the provincial administrative setup, Kite-Flying Association (KFA) officials told Daily Times on Thursday.
The KFA has been campaigning for Basant since months, and held several meetings with senior government officers, including the home secretary and the law minister, but could not convince them to allow the celebrations for the spring festival. On Tuesday, the association protested at the Lahore Arts Council against the Punjab government’s decision to continue the ban imposed on kite-flying.
KFA: The association said Governor Salmaan Taseer was in favour of celebrating Basant, and they were hopeful the city would be allowed to celebrate the festival on March 1. KFA President Khawaja Nadeem said the festival was closely associated with the city’s culture. The KFA general secretary said people from Dubai, Europe and US were coming to celebrate Basant, adding that there was no concept of celebrating the festival without flying kites. He said preparations for Basant could be finished in a very short span of time if the sale of kites and string was allowed. “The hurdles in the way of celebrating Basant have gone with the change in government,” he added.
Eminent artist Dr Ejaz Anwar, who has depicted the essence of Basant in his paintings, said the festival was a celebration of the spring season and was not associated with the Indian culture. He said night Basant should not be allowed, adding that police could monitor the activities during the day. Citing safety reasons, he said aerial firing and use of prohibited string should not be allowed.
National Sufi Council Vice-Chairman Yousuf Salahuddin said Basant had the potential to become one of the largest festivals of the world. He said the festival could be used for improving the country’s image if strict administrative measures were taken. He said Basant could be related to Urs of Madhoo Lal Hussain, adding the government should plan ahead for next year’s Basant. He said the government could invite 500 tourists to the event, and the number could be increased gradually. He said it was a Punjabi festival, and the government should take measures to make it a big festival instead of imposing a ban on it.
Basant is being celebrated in Gujranwala, Wazirabad and Faisalabad on Friday, and the night Basant would also be observed there, Daily Times has learnt.

DCO links Basant to kite flyers’ guarantee

LAHORE: The Punjab government can only give permission to celebrate Basant if the Kite Flying Association (KFA) assures that no one will be prey to metallic twine, said District Coordination Officer (DCO) Sajjad Ahmed Bhutta on Saturday.
He was addressing the KFA representatives and kite traders. A law would be enforced that would make safety antennas mandatory for motorcyclists on Basant. The KFA officials suggested fixing a day for Basant. The DCO formed a 10-member committee to give recommendations on February 6.
He said the recommendations would be sent to the chief minister, the chief secretary and the Home Department.
