KFA president hopes Basant will be celebrated as Governor Taseer in favour

LAHORE: There are bright chances of celebrating Basant and preparations for the festival have commenced with the change in the provincial administrative setup, Kite-Flying Association (KFA) officials told Daily Times on Thursday.
The KFA has been campaigning for Basant since months, and held several meetings with senior government officers, including the home secretary and the law minister, but could not convince them to allow the celebrations for the spring festival. On Tuesday, the association protested at the Lahore Arts Council against the Punjab government’s decision to continue the ban imposed on kite-flying.
KFA: The association said Governor Salmaan Taseer was in favour of celebrating Basant, and they were hopeful the city would be allowed to celebrate the festival on March 1. KFA President Khawaja Nadeem said the festival was closely associated with the city’s culture. The KFA general secretary said people from Dubai, Europe and US were coming to celebrate Basant, adding that there was no concept of celebrating the festival without flying kites. He said preparations for Basant could be finished in a very short span of time if the sale of kites and string was allowed. “The hurdles in the way of celebrating Basant have gone with the change in government,” he added.
Eminent artist Dr Ejaz Anwar, who has depicted the essence of Basant in his paintings, said the festival was a celebration of the spring season and was not associated with the Indian culture. He said night Basant should not be allowed, adding that police could monitor the activities during the day. Citing safety reasons, he said aerial firing and use of prohibited string should not be allowed.
National Sufi Council Vice-Chairman Yousuf Salahuddin said Basant had the potential to become one of the largest festivals of the world. He said the festival could be used for improving the country’s image if strict administrative measures were taken. He said Basant could be related to Urs of Madhoo Lal Hussain, adding the government should plan ahead for next year’s Basant. He said the government could invite 500 tourists to the event, and the number could be increased gradually. He said it was a Punjabi festival, and the government should take measures to make it a big festival instead of imposing a ban on it.
Basant is being celebrated in Gujranwala, Wazirabad and Faisalabad on Friday, and the night Basant would also be observed there. Daily Times, 26-Feb-09

Aik basant ke liye itni mushkil. siraf 2 din ke liye basant kerni hei aur date itni der pe. Agar kisi ka child basant ki waja se merta hei tub uss ke mother father are responsible, na keh basant manane wale.
Punjabi bhai, we are all responsible for our future generations, not only their parents. We need to take care of safety measures in celebration. We need to advise the children as their elders. Its better, if one topic can be added in school literature on safety on Basant.

The following safety measures can be adopted.
Stop younger children to fly kites on the roof without safety grills. Please don’t say, it can not be done. If people can spend a lot of time and money to arrange lights on night, what about spending some time and money to install angle bars at the corner ends of the roof and rope inserted in it. It is the cheapest way for temporary safety. If so poor to arrange it. Why not put (charpai terhi kar key or anyother store room things) around for safety. In either case, please donot try to touch them or use them as a support. If cannot, please make a yellow line with chalk on your roof and notify each other to be inside the safety area.
Please don’t get you and your children involved in catching a cut kite. The kite may cost 25 Rs. But your life is priceless for your loved ones. Please listen to the Azan properly, it will divert your attention a bit. Apart from catching and flying kites, spend some time to see beautiful views of that day.
Please call to police, if you see any person using illegal strings or using weapons for show off. Its for our own safety.
Do not ride a motor bike with out safety collar in basant days. If urgently need to go on motor bike, ride slowly and better protect your neck with muffeler or thick cloth. Donot put your kids in front of motorbike in basant days. Its better they should be sitting behind you.
I hope that others will come out with other safety measures to be adopted in Basant day to lessen the accidents.

Bhai if every body knows this and act upon, then there should be no casualty on past Basants. In addition, if there had been no accidents in the past, who would dare to impose a ban on lahoris to celebrate basant.???

Some General guidelines for conducting kite business across Punjab:
1. Create a marketplace for the kite sellers and buyers.
2. Create a governmental association of kite flying who should control the overall marketplace and who should control pricing.
3. Government should be announce the reward for the peoples who knows about string users and showing or using rifle or pistols during basant.
4. Government should to take full control of the kite makers, sellers and users.
BUT
The main hurdles for the Government are:
1. Rishwat in Police
2. Behavior of the peoples
3. Terrorism
By using the following some procedures we can celebrate this Tehwar with full happiness.

I think kite flying is a futile activity and should be permanently banned. There are so many dangers involved in this sport. If the KFA is really interested in flying their paper toys, they should do so out of the city in open grounds rather than destroying the city and the lives of innocent children by allowing kite flying inside the city. Besides, it wastes enormous amounts of time (just like cricket, I don’t know why we Pakistani’s need to indulge in all the time wasting activities), and it should be discouraged.

Punjabi bhai, point 3 and 4, I agree and carry weight. Regarding point one, It is hard for anybody to consider arrangement of market, if the basant last only for two days and kite flying is banned for the rest of the year. The kite and string manufacturers can sell their stuff by making temporary stalls for the time being just like mehndi stalls in eid days. For the consideration of permanent market, it is only feasible in kite flying park as suggested by me on overseas blog. Please find out my detailed suggestion for kite flying park in the following lines.

Please select a land area at the suburn of Lahore, Multan etc with the help of wind rose. Estimate the normal direction of the wind most of the times. Allocate a land as a flying kite park where flying kite is allowed. The quality of the thread can be checked by the quality inspectors there at all the time. The kites and threads shops should be inside that arena. The TV channel should be giving the wind direction news and chances of changes in wind direction.”

Today and tomorrow is helding basant in different cities also. So if any foreigners wants to come in pakistan they should ask for basant date in other cities than Lahore. The other cities are safe and lahore is not currently.

Listen i am also a very big fan of basant and even i have already celebrated this event in Gujranwala. But Lahore ki basant ki baat hi kuch aur hai. Magar the way theings are going now a days like political crises, Srilankan team attacke etc. I dont think the rulers are going to give permission for this activity. So stop thinking of it and spend ur time in something else as i think it is pure waste of time and result for allowing basant will be negative

I celebrated the basant on 26-27 February 2009 in Faisalabad and 5-6 March 2009 in Vehari city. The basant happened with full happiness, lahori style. The music and shoor. Police only catch the kite sellers, not kite flyers. Police ne siraf number banane ke liye kite sellers ko pakra tha inn do shehro mei. Warna basant happened with full of joyness. I am living in Faisalabad and my relatives are also from lahore and I am supposing to celebrate the basant in Lahore also.

Yaar I have come to know Basant poorey Punjab mei he aur Kites police stations mei pari huwi hei in different cities of punjab. Basant organizers ko ab ilaan kerne ki kio zaroorat huwi jabkeh basant ka ilaan 15 days pehle hona chahiye.
basant is announced in whole punjab but it can not be arranged in different cities at the same time the reason is being shortage of supply mean kites and doors..
I belong to rawalpindi so in past basant is organise in lahre in feb and in rawalpindi in march. so when the basant is celebrated in lahre then the whole kites and doors are supplied to rawalpindi if not then the shortage of supply prevails…
so is not possible to arrange in all citis so for lahore..

لاہور (اُردو پوائنٹ اخبار تازہ ترین ۔ 07فروری ۔ 2010ء) وزیر اعلیٰ پنجاب محمد شہباز شریف نے کہا ہے کہ بسنت کے حوالے سے تمام آئینی اور قانونی تقاضے پورے کئے جائیں گے‘ گورنر پنجاب بادشاہ آدمی ہیں وہ جو چاہے کہتے رہیں‘ایئر پورٹ روڈ کا زیادہ کام مکمل ہو چکا ہے جلد افتتاح کروں گا۔ وہ گزشتہ روز مادر ملت روڈ کے افتتاح کے موقع پر صحافیوں سے گفتگو کر رہے تھے۔ وزیر اعلیٰ پنجاب محمد شہباز شریف نے کہا کہ جلو میں عالمی معیار کا تفریحی پارک بنایا جائے گا اور لاہو رکے دیگر علاقوں میں موجود تفریحی پارکوں کو بھی بہتر بنایا جا رہا ہے تاکہ عوام کو زیادہ سے زیادہ تفریح کی سہولتیں ملیں۔ انہوں نے کہا کہ گورنر پنجاب بادشاہ آدمی ہیں ان کی ہر بات کا جواب دینا مناسب نہیں سمجھتا جہاں تک بسنت کا تعلق ہے تو اس حوالے سے حکومت تمام آئینی اور قانونی تقاضے پورے کریگی اور کسی کو بھی معصوم لوگوں کے گلے کاٹنے کی اجازت نہیں دی جا سکتی۔ انہوں نے کہا کہ ایئرپورٹ روڈ پر تیزی کے ساتھ کام جاری ہے اور زیادہ تر کام مکمل ہو چکا ہے اور بہت جلد میں خود اس کا افتتاح کروں گا۔
Kites in the sky?
The remarks by the Punjab governor, at a book-launching ceremony, that he will indeed celebrate Basant, is certain to add to the debate currently raging in Lahore. Salmaan Taseer stressed that it was the fundamentalist lobby that had campaigned against Basant and that it was ‘time to decide’ what kind of society we wanted. The remarks will encourage those who hold that the event is an integral part of Punjab’s culture. Among these are the traders who sell kites and the thousands involved in manufacturing them.
The issue of whether or not the colourful festival of Basant was to be marked this spring cropped up again recently in the Punjab Assembly. Responding to remarks that the event was ‘un-Islamic’ the law minister had given an assurance that the kite-flying fiesta would not go ahead. He had cited the incidents of injuries and deaths caused by sharp twine as the reason for this. The gory incidents we saw regularly, resulting in a ban being slapped on Basant some two years ago with a provision that the government could lift this for two weeks each spring, were undoubtedly distressing. The tragedies caused by razor-sharp twine have left dozens of families devastated. But one must ask if a ban is the right answer to the problem. Kite-flying has been a part of Lahore’s cultural tradition for centuries; the pastime is one of the few shared by the rich and poor alike; it offered joy and a source of entertainment opening up a window of light in an often claustrophobic environment and it presented to the world, quite literally, a brighter side of Pakistan as kites in all hues flickered across skies, swooping and diving gracefully.
In our present situation, any event that can bring in tourists or enliven lives surely needs to be encouraged. The focus should be on making kite-flying safe, by banning metallic twine or string coated with chemicals that can cut instantly through flesh. It may be possible to establish kite-flying zones in open spaces or restrict it in the most congested areas. The fact is that kite flying continues in Indian cities like Ahmedabad, where Basant remains a huge event. We need to examine how this is possible, why there is no controversy there over deaths caused by the sport and to make every possible effort to keep alive a tradition that brought joy to the lives of millions.

Preparations are being made to celebrate �Basant� in town despite a ban imposed by the local administration to that effect.
Banning the celebration of �Basant� in Rawalpindi, the Rawalpindi Division commissioner directed the concerned authorities on Friday to take strict action against kite-sellers and kite-flyers.
On the other hand, kite sellers and flyers are flexing their muscles to violate the orders.
Talking to �The News,� Rawalpindi Division Commissioner Captain (r) Zahid Saeed said that the Supreme Court of Pakistan and Lahore High Court had directed the concerned authorities to ensure complete ban on kite flying. �I have ordered all concerned officers to strictly check violation of ban on kite-flying and ordered police to conduct raids to apprehend violators,� he said.
�Basant� is likely to be celebrated in Rawalpindi on February 20 and 21.
A large number of shopkeepers in Raja Bazaar and Narankari Bazaar are secretly selling kites, strings and fireworks. Shopkeepers in congested localities of Rawalpindi are also involved in this business.
A kite-seller in Raja Bazaar, on condition of anonymity, told �The News� that many people are selling kites and strings in the market, as it is a profitable business. He said that small businessmen were approaching them for purchasing kites, strings and fireworks for �Basant�.
�We cannot sell these items openly as there is a ban on sale of fireworks and kites,� he added.
�The News� has learnt that people associated with the business were busy in making kites and chemical threads in different localities of Rawalpindi, including Pirwadhai, Misrial, Bagh Sardaran, Banni, Purana Qila, Ganjmandi, Dhoke Ratta, Arya Mohallah, Dhoke Elahi Bukhsh, Dhoke Chiraghdin and Dheri Hassanabad. A source told �The News� that kites and chemical threads are being made on rooftops of houses. According to him, businessmen are not selling kites and threads openly to avoid legal action. �They are delivering kites and chemical threads at the given addresses after receiving orders on telephones,� he added.
Sources informed �The News� that businessmen bring all material for making kites and chemical threads from Lahore, Sargodha, Gujranwala and Sialkot.
Ahmed Hassan, a resident of Purana Qila, said that most people were suffering from tension due to unprecedented price hike, shortage of kitchen items and increase in prices of petroleum products. �People want some kind of relief. Therefore, the government should lift ban on �Basant� celebrations,� he demanded.
Talha Usman, a resident of Mohanpura, said that kite flying is a dangerous activity. �In the past, dozens of people lost their lives and sustained serious injuries while flying kites on the rooftops of their houses. Several young boys and children had been killed while running after stray kites on busy roads. Therefore the ban is good to save precious lives,� he said.
Sania Ahmed, a housewife, said that �Basant� is a festival, which should be celebrated in a light mood and firing should be avoided.
�Basant� is likely to be celebrated in Rawalpindi on February 20 and 21.

Jub Feb aur March k months aatey hain tau main bauhat udaas ho jata hoon kiyunk Basant abb ek political issue bun chukha hai. Abb Basant kabhi nahin hogi. کچھ تو متوجہ کرنے کو ہمارے پاس تھا دوسرے لوگوں کے لیےچلو بہار کا میلہ بسنت تو تھا کم از کم اس ماہ میں بے شمار لوگ پاکستان آتے تھے اور ہماری اییر لانز ہمارے ہوٹل ہمار ے شاپنگ پلازے بھر جایا کرتے تھےاور لوگوں میں جوش اور اکٹھے ہونے کا موقع مل جاتا تھا
لیکن ہمارے ملک کی گورنمنٹ کی بے حسی نے اور ایک دوسرے کی مخالفت نے اس تہوار کو ختم کر دیا اور پاکستان کی ایک بہت بڑی کشش ختم کر دی جس سے ایک مزدور سے لے کر بڑے سے بڑے مل مالک کو فایدہ ہوتا تھا
