LAHORE: A baby macaw was stolen from the Lahore Zoo while a tigress died on Saturday.
Zoo director Zafar Shah confirmed that a two-week old baby macaw had been stolen that cost around Rs100,000. ‘Someone managed to break the cage and steal the parrot,’ he said.
Shah said stern action would be taken against the thief. Asked whether the parrot was stolen by some outsider or the zoo staff the director said: ‘No visitor can dare break the cage and it must be the work of someone from the staff.’
He said an FIR would be registered against the culprit. The director said the tigress operated upon by zoo doctors a few weeks ago to take out her dead babies had also died.
A three year old tigress had not been in good health ever since she developed complications in her uterus.
He said the body of the tigress was sent for a post-mortem examination to know the exact cause of the death. Doctors had made a tall claim about the successful caesarean of the tigress conducted for the first time in the history of the zoo.
Requesting anonymity, a zoo official said the liver and kidneys of the tigress had been damaged. He said the doctors tried their best, but the animal could not survive.
