Dr Daniyal Nagi
The city of Lahore, grieves on the loss of another of the Lahore’s Grand Old Men.Birjees Nagi B.A.LLB was brutally murdered in his home in Johar Town on 8th Dec 2009.He was 77.Born in Amritser to Maulvi Ibrahim Nagi District & Session Judge, who had opted for Pakistan in 1947 despite lucrative offers and brother of Capt Jirjees Nagi Shaheed of 1965 war. Mr Nagi always upheld the traditions of his family,of integrity, boldness and truthfulness. Educated in Central Model School, Government College and Law College, he was a true intellectual and a true lahorite to the core. The generation of Ravians of 1950s might remember him as one of the Nagi brothers who were on the forefront in all sports and literary activities.
His command over English language was enviable. Though aristocratic in outlook, he was yet humble at heart. Always willing to help people in need. Being a witness to carnage of 1947 in Amritser and Lahore, he was a keen observant of the radical changes, that Pakistani society has gone through in the last 6 decades, and was always worried about the future of his beloved land. Author of books on poetry and socio-political situation of Pakistan, he was well known in English speaking intellectual circles ,and was a walking encloypedia. His company was always refreshing and thought provoking.Remanant of a lost generation, he indeed deserved a better end. Being strangulated brutally in a robbery cum murder for an old car and a black and white TV, this was not the end he ever thought off.
Its time that we all as Pakistanis have to think that in what direction things are going, and as a nation have to redefine our vistas and put an end to further decay.
May his Soul Rest in Peace : Ameen.
