The Citizens Archive of Pakistan (CAP), a Karachi based NGO, has just opened its doors to Lahore! CAP is a renowned educational institution and cultural heritage center dedicated to preserving and commemorating the country’s history. As part of this initiative, CAP’s Oral History Project has become its calling card- a symbol of the willingness to welcome the memories of the people as valid archival material and to recognize individuals from diverse communities as makers of history. Since the project’s launch in 2008, CAP has collected over 500 hours of interviews with people from every rank and file of the country, including collections of Quaid-e-Azam’s funeral, life in refugee camps, social events and interactions, the Pakistan movement and life in Pakistan’s major cities before and after partition.
CAP’s Lahore office is actively looking for interns to hire for the October-November period for the Oral History Project. It is a minimum 6 weeks commitment although we strongly recommend that interns complete 8 weeks with us. CAP’s interns do not file folders or make coffee, they do actual work! Interns are trained to conduct interviews of people who have witnessed historical events in Pakistan and operate archival recording equipment. They manage a vast database (our photography archive alone contains more than 30,000 images) and are responsible for sorting, arranging, weeding, and describing assets related to archiving.
CAP is looking for College students or those who have completed their A ‘Levels who can make a 9-5 Monday to Friday commitment. For a project on minorities in Lahore, CAP is also looking for interns who are willing to work just on the weekends, Saturday and Sunday, 9-5. If that’s you, then come join our exciting venture!
