Chauburgi

Construction of underpass begins despite objections

LAHORE

Ignoring all objections from civil society bodies, the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) has started the construction of a new underpass on Canal Bank Road at Jinnah Hospital crossing and a road linking Canal Bank Road to Wahdat Road.

The project is a part of the extension plan of Maulana Shaukat Ali Road to Multan Road through the Punjab University land. The new road is 3.4-km long with two underpasses, first at Lahore Canal Crossing and second at Wahdat Road Crossing. The estimated cost of this project is over Rs 1.7 billion, a senior LDA official said.

Imrana Tiwana, Secretary Lahore Conservation Society (LCS), while talking to The News, said the ongoing construction was a clear violation of the orders of Supreme Court of Pakistan and Canal Heritage Act, which prohibits construction on infrastructure, felling or damage of or to trees, pollution of water, hunting and use of firearms in the Canal Heritage Park.

Phone lines not fully operational in Lahore after PTCL fire

LAHORE: It has been three days since a fire erupted at the Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) exchange in Lahore but most of the city’s telephone lines, one link and the routers of a mobile company are yet to be restored.

A lot of difficulties and delays were faced while extinguishing the fire to the mentioned building but the restoration of the system seems more difficult as even to date the telephonic system has not been fully restored because of which the people of Lahore are experiencing problems with telephone connections and are unable to call even emergency numbers such as police, 1122 and other helplines.

Punjab PA turns into fish market as Sana, Zaheer trade allegations
Friday, November 06, 2009
By Babar Dogar

LAHORE: The Punjab Assembly turned into a fish market on Thursday when Law Minister Rana Sana Ullah Khan and Opposition leader Ch Zaheer traded allegations against each other’s leadership, declaring them dacoits and Qabza Mafia heads.

The parliamentarians from the PML-N and the PML-Q in the Punjab Assembly crossed all limits of decency in exposing the past corruptions of their top leadership. Law Minister Rana Sana alleged Ch Pervaiz Elahi and Ch Moonis Elahi were dacoits and Qabza Mafia heads who had illegally occupied 4,000-kanal land of Roberts Agriculture Farm, besides being involved in the Punjab Bank scam.

In retaliation, Opposition leader Ch Zaheer termed PML-N Quaid Mian Nawaz Sharif and Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif dacoits and heads of Qabza Mafia who had illegally occupied 1,600-acre land in Jati Umra, Raiwind.

Rana Sana challenged Ch Zaheer to prove the allegations, or he would have to resign while Ch Zaheer informed the house that he was being threatened within and outside the assembly by the law minister.

Shahbaz Sharif sets a leadership benchmark

By Raza Rumi

While the pundits have rambled on the venality of the politician and the slothfulness of the bureaucracy, Pakistan’s largest province has witnessed the rise of a unique phenomenon in terms of provincial public management articulated by its second-time Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif. In terms of efficacy of the public services and the administration of state machinery, the younger Sharif has set a leadership benchmark that daunts the political class as a whole. What are the points of departure here and how did this formidable image develop in less than a decade?

From 1997-99, arguably not a long stint in office, Shahbaz Sharif demonstrated the maximalist application and range of political will — from policy setting to micro-managerial interventions. It was a style that went down well with the populace, sent shivers down the imaginary backbones of the civil service and took the Continue reading

Female MPAs ‘spew venom’

This report from Daily Times written by nauman tasleem is funny as well as reinforces the stereotype

LAHORE: Female legislators of treasury and opposition made sarcastic comments against each other in the Punjab Assembly’s fourth session on Friday. Punjab Assembly Speaker Rana Muhammad Iqbal also amused the members with some funny remarks. Pakistan Muslim League–Nawaz (PML-N) legislator Tayyeba Zameer stood up and tried to say something but was prevented from doing so by female PML-Q members Amna Ulfat, Amina Jehangir and Samina Khawar Hayat. Tayyeba became infuriated and said, “The opposition’s female members have no etiquette. They are behaving like Mohalla women.” To this, Samina replied: “You (Tayyeba) too are ill-mannered. If we are Mohalla women, you too are not from a mehal (palace).” Also during Friday’s session, a PML-Q member asked Irrigation Minister Raja Riaz about the low water level in canals. Riaz stood up and tried to answer the question, but the speaker stopped him by saying, “Did you get my permission to speak?” Riaz sat back down, which made all the members laugh.Pakistan People’s Party member Fouzia Behram said all the female MPAs, whether from the treasury or opposition, should be respected. In response, the speaker said, “All the male MPAs are like your brothers, so they should also be respected.”
